Audio DSP · Musical acoustics

Signal processing, with an ear for the piano.

I'm Jordan Matthews, an audio DSP engineer and working piano tuner. I hold a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Audio DSP. I'm interested in how real instruments produce sound, and how to analyse and model it.

Interests

Piano acoustics

Inharmonicity and the partial structure of piano tones, stretch tuning, and the coupling between strings, bridge and soundboard.

Physical modelling synthesis

Mathematical and computational models of instruments: digital waveguides, modal synthesis and finite-difference schemes for strings and resonating bodies.

Musical acoustics & measurement

Spectral analysis, partial tracking and pitch estimation, measuring how real instruments depart from the idealised models.

Contact

Happy to talk about DSP, acoustics or anything piano-related.
